HOW DO SMITH MACHINE WORK
Entering any gym, there is almost always a "door" -shaped steel frame: the barbell is suspended in mid-air by pulleys at both ends and can only move up and down but cannot sway left and right. It is the Smith machine. The seemingly simple structure is actually backed by a sophisticated mechanical and safety system.
Core structure
The soul of the Smith aircraft lies in its "fixed orbit". A chrome-molybdenum steel barbell bar that has undergone quenching treatment, with ball bearing sliders of approximately 50mm in diameter inserted into both ends; Two vertical C-shaped guide rails are embedded on the outside of the sliding sleeve, and self-lubricating copper strips are provided on the inside of the guide rails, which can reduce the coefficient of friction to below 0.08. When the user lifts or lowers the barbell, the ball bearings roll on the surface of the copper bars, keeping the barbell in a strict vertical trajectory while significantly reducing noise.
Security mechanism
Symmetrical lock holes are opened every 5 cm on both sides of the guide rail. The "safety hook" on the barbell is controlled by a spring steel plate: it can be lifted up gently to get out of the lock hole, and it will automatically reset when released. Experimental data shows that it only takes 0.2 seconds from releasing the hook to fully locking it, which is sufficient to instantly support the weight at exhaustion. In addition, most commercial models are equipped with rubber buffer pads at the bottom to prevent the barbell from accidentally falling and causing impact on the ground.
The transmission of force
Because the track restricts lateral displacement, the body no longer requires additional stabilizing muscle groups to control balance. Electromyography tests conducted by the Shanghai Institute of Sports Science show that compared with the free barbell, the activation of the anterior deltoid muscle decreases by approximately 12% during the Smith machine bench press, while the peak activation of the pectoralis major increases by 9%, indicating that more load is concentrated on the target muscle group.
Maintenance and Lifespan
The guide rails of international brands are made of military-grade steel and undergo nitriding treatment, with a surface hardness of up to HRC 60. The official claim is that they can be used for more than ten years under 8 hours of commercial strength per day. Domestic brands make up for the material gap by thickening the wall thickness of the guide rails (from 2mm to 3mm) and adding anti-rust coatings, with an actual service life of about 6 to 8 years.
On-site experience
Yesterday afternoon, a reporter saw at a 24-hour gym in the western part of Beijing that four beginners were completing the Smith squat under the guidance of a coach: adjusting the safety hook to the height of the hip joint, adding 40 kilograms of bell plates, and training independently without any accompaniment throughout the process. The store manager said that since the installation of the Smith machine, the rate of equipment accidents during the night period has dropped from 2.3 per month to zero.
Conclusion
A vertical slide rail, a pair of ball bearings and a set of spring safety hooks make up the entire working principle of the Smith machine. It not only lowers the training threshold but also makes it possible to "lift heavy weights alone".http://SMITH MACHINE
